Trying to assess graduate writing programs is like rating the top party schools: You can count how many bottles go in, and how many empties go out, but you can’t prove the party was fun.

Don’t be put off. These programs can be great, even more so when the low-residency part can be completed on an island off the coast of New England (see photo above).
Deviating from the traditional creative writing graduate programs, freelance writer and Romper news writer, Annamarya Scaccia graduated with a Master’s in Journalism. Ultimately, the decision was financial because she couldn’t afford expensive workshops, residencies, or retreats in order to grasp new skills.
Low-Residency programs are an exception; I include the cost of both tuition and accommodation because you’re pretty much expected to board with your fellow writers—like a summer camp, only sometimes it’ll be winter and in Vermont!—and certain Low-Residency programs don’t even separate the cost of tuition from room and board.
